  • Three parties have signed a Memorandum of Cooperation
  • Partnership to share core technology of energy-saving doors and windows and to promote collaborative development of upstream and downstream chains
  • Baydur® fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane windows have been shown to improve thermal and sound insulation, and safety performance of buildings
To meet the increasing demand for China’s national regulations on building energy efficiency, Covestro has signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with fiberglass manufacturer Chongqing Polycomp International Corporation (CPIC) and Shanghai KraussMaffei Machinery Co., Ltd. to develop energy-efficient window solutions based on the Baydur® polyurethane pultruded composites from Covestro, in a bid to jointly lead the upgrade of energy-saving doors and windows.

China is on track to reduce building energy consumption and meet the environmental sustainability standards. Research shows that in Beijing, for example, the heat lost through doors and windows accounts for up to 25% of building energy consumption. Innovative materials are the key to achieving building energy efficiency, as they can improve the thermal insulation performance of windows and doors. In the proposed policies in Beijing, the energy saving standards for doors and windows will be significantly raised. For example, the heat transfer coefficient K must be as low as 1.1 w/m2-k.

“With over 80 years of innovation, Covestro, the inventor of polyurethanes, has a long history of developing cutting edge solutions,” said Julien Guiu, Vice President of Industrial Marketing Asia Pacific at Covestro’s Business Unit Polyurethanes. “The application of polyurethane pultruded composites to window and door systems has resulted in an energy-saving breakthrough.”

Material innovation for better energy efficiency

Baydur® fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane energy-saving windows use alkali-free fiberglass as the reinforcing material, polyurethane resin as the matrix resin, and are made of profiles formed by the closed-mold injection pultrusion process. It integrates thermal insulation, energy saving, fire safety, sound insulation and noise reduction. The traditional broken bridge aluminum door and window system uses fiberglass reinforced nylon PA66+GF25 as the heat insulation material. With higher requirements on heat insulation and energy saving, the width of the heat insulation strip is increasing, the profile structure more complicated, and the cost rising.

To address this dilemma, Baydur® fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane pultruded composite material has a widened insulation distance, a low heat transfer coefficient and still strong insulation. In this specific design, the K value of the system doors and windows can be as low as 0.77 w/m2-k. In addition, Baydur® brings costs down by simplifying the cross-sectional structure of the profile, while minimizing indoor noise through innovative sound insulation. To ensure safety, the system windows have passed the national standard one-hour fire integrity test.

Partnership to lead future market of energy-saving doors and windows

According to the memorandum, Covestro will further the research and development of innovative technologies for Baydur® fiberglass-reinforced polyurethane energy-saving windows to meet the higher energy-saving requirements of future buildings.

As one of the leading fiberglass manufacturers, CPIC will further research and develop glass fibers for the high-speed pultrusion process of polyurethane and leverage its glass varieties and interface treatment agents to meet customers’ requirements for efficiency, surface quality and strength.

“The use of composite materials for energy-saving doors and windows is a general trend. Pultrusion polyurethane is environmentally friendly in the production process, and has high fiber content and high modulus, high strength, expansion coefficient close to concrete, and strong nail holding strength,” said Yao Yuan, deputy general manager of CPIC. “This newly developed industry requires the integration of many different technologies. The cooperation of the three parties – in the reinforcement materials, matrix resin and molding equipment – plays to our respective strengths by providing systematic solutions for customers. The three parties are committed to promoting the development of the energy-saving doors and windows industry.”

As a leading equipment supplier in Germany, KraussMaffei specializes in the development of high-efficiency special equipment for pultrusion of polyurethane, which helps the polyurethane profile production enterprises achieve industrialization and scale.

Xu Yutang, Vice President of Reaction Molding Division of Shanghai KraussMaffei Machinery Co., Ltd. said, “In recent years, KraussMaffei and its partners have explored the development of closed-mold injection-type rapid reaction pultrusion systems to provide the industry with a more efficient, intelligent, environmentally friendly and integrated production method. For the production of new door and window profiles, along with providing technical solutions, we have made new energy-saving doors and windows with low heat transfer coefficient, easy coating, high strength and high flame retardancy.”
